The Path of the Darkest Night

This sermon speaks to people who:
    • have prayed about the same burden for a long time and are growing weary.

    • wonder whether feeling spiritually exhausted means their faith is failing.

    • feel dried up or less useful than they once were.

    • cannot understand why God's comfort or intervention seems delayed.

    • are dealing with false accusations or deliberate opposition.

    • struggle to find words beyond "Lord, help me."

    • want to remain faithful but know they need strength they cannot produce themselves.

Big Idea

When we cannot see what God is doing, we can continue to trust what He has said, bring Him our questions, and depend on His steadfast love for strength to obey.

Summary

Psalm 119:81-88 describes a believer near the end of his strength. The psalmist longs for God's intervention, watches for His promise, and feels as worn out as a wineskin exposed to smoke. His enemies spread lies and set traps, and he wonders how much longer he must endure. Yet his exhaustion has not silenced his prayers or severed his dependence on God's Word.

Pastor Darrin traces the depth of the psalmist's distress, despair, and dependence. The psalmist asks when God will comfort him, how long he must wait, and when justice will come. These questions become expressions of lament as he brings them to God. He continues to hope in Scripture, remember its commands, trust its truth, ask for help, and cling to it under pressure. His final prayer asks God to give him life through steadfast love so that he may continue in obedience. The sermon points to Christ's death and resurrection as the greatest display of that love and reminds believers that their hope rests in God's faithfulness when their own strength is failing.
